Theatre Underground is now casting for the one-woman show: You Didn’t Ask To Be Here.
(Written and set to be directed by Allan Mackey.)
Welcome to the land of lost toys and discarded dreams. Charlie, the living jack-in-the-box, is your patron saint and protector. Childlike, and playful, she spends her time telling grand tales and fighting the advances of her arch-nemesis, the self-named Great Enemy.
Romeo & Zombie Juliet. How the Unicorns Lost Their Horns. The Question of Would-be Star Quarterback John Tucker. The Tragic Tale of The Girl Outside.
Charlie is good at stories, bad at facing her fears. And with the threat of the Great Enemy continuing to grow, her continued inability to do so puts everybody in danger. Smile.
Looking for: female 19+, able to play 15-24, for the role of Charlie. Charlie is young and playful. Impish, charming, wily, and mischievous.
You Didn’t Ask To Be Here is a highly theatrical storytelling show with a lot of movement, physicality and clowning. Candidates for Charlie must have some level of movement, clowning, or dance skills as well as strong dramatization (storytelling) skills. It is a one-person show, so candidates must also be confidently able to carry a show for a full hour plus.
All interested candidates are welcome to submit resumes and headshots along with a statement of interest. Please introduce yourself in your email and highlight your relevant experience. We are also requesting self tapes — a recording of you performing any monologue/duologue under two minutes long. (Self tapes do not need to be professional quality — make sure the light is good, record in a quiet space, and use your cell phone camera.) If you know that the director is familiar with your work, you do not need to submit a self tape.
Only selected applicants will be contacted. They will be asked to prepare a storytelling piece for in person audition, with dates to be set for mid-November. The audition piece should be three to five minutes long and can be anything from your own writing to classic fairy tales. What we’re most looking for is your characterization and ability to captivate.
Following those auditions, we will select candidates for interviews and final callbacks. These candidates will be asked to perform a short excerpt from the script for You Didn’t Ask To Be Here.
Send emails to mackey©theatreunderground•com before November 7th to be considered.
Please note the following important considerations before you email in:
I’m looking for a young actress with initiative and ambition and their own ideas. A creative partner to play, experiment, and find the best ways to dramatize the individual scenes and stories in the script on the stage. If selected, you will be helping create the show.
You Didn’t Ask To Be Here is designed for touring as a festival show. Both out into the Fringe circuit as well as for submission to juried festivals. If you are unwilling or unable to travel with the show, please do not apply.
Payment will be through equal profit sharing over the life of the show (including future productions of You Didn’t Ask To Be Here.).
